Weddings: Women’s Most Important Milestone
Society can present the wedding as something by which to measure a woman’s worth. There are expectations for women to get married, and an unmarried woman can come to lose a sense of self-worth because of society’s criticisms. Thinking about popular culture, there is a plethora of wedding movies, all with the same message: all women really want is to get married to Mr. Right.
The movie 27 Dresses conveys some of these themes. The main character has been a bridesmaid 27 times (hence the dress number) and is known for her eagerness to tend to the happiness of others before herself. This translates to her work as a bridesmaid. She helps her brides have the perfect wedding, which is what makes them happy. And her lack of a man and a wedding are what contribute to her initial feelings of discontentment.
