violence against children

So in our recent class about violence against women, for violence within the home we focused on violence between intimate partners, but there seemed to be a glaring hole in our discussion, violence directed at children. What are the gendered implications of abuse directed at daughters instead of sons or vise versa? I am under the belief that yet again, men tend to be the abusers, but abuse coming from mothers probably occurs (as has been popularized by the film Black Swan). How does this abuse effect the gender role / place in the family the children grow up into?
